Popular Music Defined
By definition, popular music is a genre that belongs to a number of musical styles accessible to the general public and distributed by one or more accepted mass media. It is sometimes abbreviated to pop music. Pop music however is associated to a less broad branch of popular music.
Humanity scholars have proposed a broader range of definition for popular music. They offer four conceptions of definition of popular music. The normative definition states that it is an inferior type of music. Sociological definition defines popular music as a style identified with a particular group. Negative definition asserts that it is something that is wholly different from other types of music. And the technologico-economic definition of popular music is that is it disseminated by mass media.
